Navigating Blood Tests: A Naturopath’s Guide to Getting Accurate and Reliable Results
It’s frustrating when you visit your doctor, get a basic blood analysis, and are told everything’s normal—especially when you still feel unwell. Remember, your body doesn’t lie! Don’t be discouraged; listen to it and consider seeking a second opinion.
As a bachelor-qualified Naturopath, I’m trained in pathology interpretation and analysis. I can also order and refer you for blood tests, though these won’t be covered by Medicare. What sets us apart is our functional approach. We look at optimal ranges rather than just diseased ones, helping us identify trends and changes before they become serious. This proactive approach is key to preventative healthcare.
To help you get the most accurate blood test results and avoid unnecessary disappointment, here are my top 5 tips:
Get Tested Regularly
Every 12 months if you’re symptom-free and have no existing conditions.
Every 6 months if you’re managing a condition or aren’t feeling particularly symptomatic.
Every 3 months if you’re actively treating a condition, experiencing symptoms, or had concerning markers in previous tests.
2. Test at the Right Time
Consult with your practitioner about the best timing for specific tests, especially for female hormones, which need to be tested at particular times of the month.
3. Test Under the Right Conditions
Ensure you’re fasted, hydrated, rested, and relaxed before testing. These factors can significantly impact your results.
4. Avoid Testing During Certain Situations
Refrain from testing during illness (wait 7 days), after heavy exercise (wait 24 hours), after sexual intercourse (wait 24 hours), or while supplementing (stop 48 hours before testing).
5. Keep Variables Consistent
For accurate comparisons, test at the same time of the month, use the same lab, and ideally, go at the same time of day (8 am is usually ideal).
If you’ve encountered resistance from your GP or found your previous experiences unhelpful, you might want to consider a different approach. You can now order a full set of basic blood tests through Instant Scripts for just $20, with an optional Vitamin D test for an additional $40. This can simplify the process of getting your blood work done.
